Dynamic Microphones
3
There are the two primary types of microphones used in the church. These are Dynamic microphones and Condenser microphones. The way a dynamic microphone works is by converting the acoustic energy of a source into electrical energy through the use of what is called a “moving coil.” This is a “Thin metallic diaphragm and an attached coil of wire that is located inside a permanent magnet ". When sound arrives at a dynamic microphone, the sound waves causes the diaphragm to vibrate. When this happens the attached coils vibrate within the magnetic field. This vibration of the diaphragm and wires changes depending on the frequency (pitch) and how loud the source is. It’s these changes in the vibration of the diaphragm and magnetic field that are converting the acoustic signal into an electrical signal, which allows the acoustic source to be transmitted to the mixing console, and eventually the PA system.
